Have you selected your committee yet?

Christian Education promotes the Sunday School and recruits and supports teachers.  This committee also provides other educational opportunities of the congregation, such as Vacation Bible School, Lenten discussions, and youth groups.

Membership and Evangelism takes care of organizing fellowship dinners, works with the newsletter, church web site, membership directory, and keeps the church records up-to-date.  They also follow up with visitors and coordinate our roadside trash pick up.

Missions helps keep the various outreach concerns of the congregation before us.  It coordinates our involvement with Festival of Sharing in Sedalia, maintains our participation through Ecumenical Ministries with HAVEN House, SERVE Food Pantry, Parish Nurses of Callaway County, and Kingdom Respite Care.  The committee also interprets the “special day” offerings for the Disciples Mission Fund, and the Week of Compassion offering for Church World Service.

Property supervises the maintenance and upkeep of our building.  It plans workdays and coordinates repairs.  It also discusses policies related to the use of the building.

Stewardship and Finance receives budget requests from the various committees and writes the church budget.  This committee is also responsible for the annual stewardship campaign, and is involved in the planning for any fundraising event.  They monitor income and expenses to make sure the budget remains in balance.

Worship not only is responsible for the Sunday morning worship, but has involvement in the special services, events, and programs around Christmas and Easter.  This committee also takes care of the banners, cloths, and other decorations used in the sanctuary, and plans for other enhancements such as devotional books, candle lighting, and special music.

Reflections

From Rev. Barbara Gulick, Interim Minister

Life just looks better when the sun is shining.  As I write this, it’s a bitterly cold January day, but the sun is shining.  And life looks and feels altogether different than in yesterday’s cloudy drizzle.  The sky is blue, the squirrels are romping through the trees in a frenzy of playfulness and when the sun sets it will have moved just the slightest distance to the north squeezing in a few more precious seconds of daylight.  In the dark winter days that I know are yet to come, it will be the hope and certainty of spring that sustains us.

As we approach the beginning of Lent with Ash Wednesday on February 6th, we are reminded that Easter in many ways is about the return of light into the world.  We await Easter in the certainty of the resurrection.  Yet Jesus encountered much darkness on the road to Jerusalem.  And it must have looked as if the light was forever extinguished by the suffering of the cross.

We will begin our Lenten journey with an Ash Wednesday Worship service on February 6th at 7:00.  The service will include scripture, meditation, prayer, special music and the imposition of ashes for those who choose to participate in this ancient and moving tradition.  Come as you are and begin your personal Lenten journey at Millersburg Christian Church.

During Lent we will continue our Wednesday evening prayer group from 6:00 to 6:30 focusing on the Seven Last Words of Christ.   Sunday Worship and Adult Sunday School will provide further opportunities to consider the age old story of the passion of our Lord and Savior as we examine his words from the cross and their amazing relevance to our new millennium.  In worship and study, we will be guided by the lectionary scripture.  I look forward to sharing this most holy of seasons with you.

My hope and prayer for coming weeks is that the promise of spring will guide us through the winter doldrums; and that the certainty of the resurrection will guide us on paths of renewal in our personal lives and in the life of our congregation.                             Yours in the peace and grace of Christ,                                                       Barbara

From the Sesquicentennial Committee:
We hope to have a book/DVD about MCC history prepared by May so that we can spend the summer focusing on the actual celebration on the weekend of
Aug 22. Come to the church youth-sponsored chili supper on Feb 16 and see some photos and historical artifacts.

From the Pastoral Search Committee:

The Pastoral Search Committee, charged with the goal of finding a permanent pastor for Millersburg Christian Church, is getting back into gear with a meeting on Wed, Jan 23. We hope to continue a favorable relationship with Rev. Gulick as she guides us through the search process, which includes a congregational self-examination (remember those questionnaires from last October?). There may be other times in the coming
months when we ask the congregation for opinions about the goals and directions for MCC. If you have an opinion or idea or question about this
process, please contact me or one of the other members of the search committee.
Jeff Moran, Chair

President’s Ponderings

Our functional committees are the backbone, heart, liver, lungs, etc. of Millersburg Christian Church.  You get the idea – the committees are essential to our life together, working as the Body of Christ.  Together, we make ministry happen.

Each member of our fellowship has important gifts to be shared and talents that are needed.  We all have ideas and suggestions that are useful and important.  Please select the committee with which you would like to serve during 2008.

A phrase from one of Rev. Gulick’s fine sermons has stuck with me: “Be faithful to divine prodding…”  What does God want me to do?  What is God prodding you to do now?   God will equip us for the task at hand.

Lord, thank you for the opportunity to serve, Barbara

The Calendar is Back!

Luella has added the newsletter back to the calendar.  To keep the number of birthdays and anniversaries manageable, she will only list the information of active participants in our congregation or members.  Please let Luella know of any corrections to the calendar data.  Thanks!

Open Cabinet Meeting

Tuesday, February 12th at 7:00 P.M.

Congregation Invited

Q: What is an Open Cabinet Meeting and how is it like an open kitchen cupboard?

A:  Both have open doors that can reveal  neatly arranged necessities,

  • some things that need to be kept and some that can be discarded
  • overstuffed shelves that need to be cleaned out and carefully re-sorted before the ructure becomes overburdened.

Sooo--- you are invited to join Rev. Gulick on Tuesday, February 12th at 7:00 to take a look at the inner workings of our church.  It will be a time for sharing new ideas, affirming old ideas, prioritizing both old and new, and considering ways to “work smarter” for the on-going mission of Millersburg Christian Church.  And as the old song says, we will “accentuate the positive…eliminate the negative (and don’t mess with Mr. In-between!)”  In all that we do we will continue to seek God’s will for us as we continue to minister in Jesus name.  Come join us for this important meeting.  The door is open!

Secretary Notes-I would like to extend my gratitude to the congregation

for the opportunity to have served as your new secretary. I thank you for

your patience as  each of you have contributed to my training.

Hopefully, attitude has outweighed ability in my case, thus far.  I look forward to improving my skills this year . I have set aside my Christmas bonus to save for a class that will improve my computer/graphic skills.  I would also like to thank each of you for the warm and loving welcome you extended to me when I began attending this wonderful church. I see that same warm welcome given to my friend and neighbor who has attended worship the past two weeks.  God has truly worked in my life these past six months in some wonderful ways.

                                                                             God Bless To All,
